The Farmer’s Market International Parade – Marché du Carouge (Switzerland)

I spent some days in Switzerland so I would like to participate with a Swiss market to the Farmer’s Market International Parade hosted by Melissa and Elena.

Markt in Carouge
The market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday from 07:00 to 13:00,
Place du Marché at Carouge.
There are a lot of other markets in Geneva.

I lived during 4 years in Geneva but rarely visited Carouge. But now when I visit my friends I try to do a walking tour through Carouge and if possible I have a look at the small market, too. There are only a couple of market stands, but they sell fresh vegetables and fruits and some real Italian food.

Fruits (exotic & local)
Salads and some vegtables

Of course I stopped at the cheese stand, owned by a Spanish (!) family. This time I bought a piece of Brie with truffle and another piece of Brie with wood garlic (very „en vogue“ in Switzerland) and some yogurt from Fribourg.

The food at the market is quite expensive, even more expensive then in a well-assorted supermarket. Unfortunately markets are becoming a rarity in Switzerland and are no more everyday buying places as for example in Spain. I personally love to shop at markets. The only problem is parking space, also in Spain, so I shop more in supermarkets.

I hope you enjoyed the market tour. Next time I will take you along a Spanish market.

About Carouge:
Carouge, a small suburb of Geneva, was only to develop after 1754, when it was granted to the Kingdom of Sardinia.

A city plan then was designed by Turinese architects with a checkerboard arrangement around an axis planted with trees (the Place du Marché) and low houses with galleries in the rear opening on gardens.

To this day, the city of Carouge has retained its Mediterranean-like atmosphere. Its bustling streets and many shaded squares invite one to stroll.

  1. It’s very funny to see a report speaking about a market that I know very well and which is so close to where I live!

Your post made me see it in a differently way, thanks…
